Missa In Jazz Concert
Missa In JazzThe Mad River Chorale’s fall concert will feature the U.S. premiere of German composer Peter Schindler’s Missa In Jazz, a work in the jazz idiom with words of the Latin Mass. There will be two presentations of this work: First on Friday, November 20, at 7:30pm at St. Andrews Church in Waterbury. Then, on Sunday, November 22, at 4pm in the Warren School.
Choral conductor Piero Bonamico described the concert as being “a marvelous major choral work that combines a Latin text with a contemporary setting. It is by no means as “Jazzy” as our last program but more like “Magnificat, The Groovy Version of Ox,” presented by MRC in 2007.
Accompanying the 50-voice choir, now in its 17th year, will be Mary Jane Austin on organ, Dov Schiller, percussion, and Michael Zsoldos on saxophone.
Missa in Jazz was first performed in 2001 with Schindler's ensemble, Pipes and Phones, and the Junger Kammerchor Baden in Stuttgart, Germany.
The composition has all the elements of jazz, including rhythmic drum percussion and saxophone riffs, but the vocal arrangements are soaring and melodic, a piece of music that brings a subtle jazz influence to the Latin Mass without sacrificing its solemnity.
